Some resources I gathered on the 8, 9, 10 balls billiards positional play

Principles

Some important principles for positional play in pool:

  • Plan three balls ahead. Get into the correct angle for the next shot.
  • Angle around 30 to 45 degrees is good.
  • Get into the line of the shot instead of crossing the line.
  • Choose natural angles for the cueball. For example, the natural 30 degrees, tangent line, simple stop shot, stun shot.
  • Follow is easier than draw.
  • If possible, use minimum cueball movement.
  • If possible, use pocket speed so the pocket plays bigger.
  • Solve the problem balls early.
  • Use the table center for position. Note the 45 degrees rule says that if the cueball lefts the end rail at 45 degrees, it will head through the center of the table.
